How to Measure Your Room
A floor plan is a bird's-eye of a room. First sketch an overall outline of your room. You can start with a rectangle and add any corners, doors, and windows.
Tools:
Graph paper (4 squares per inch)
Pencil with an eraser
Tape measure--preferably 25 ft. steel retractable
Architect's scale or a ruler
STEP 1:
Measure the overall length and width of your room. Draw a rectangle at 1/4"=1' on your graph paper using your scale or ruler. (Make sure you measure to the nearest 1/2 inch.)
STEP 2:
Measure from each wall corner to the edge of window, closet, and door moldings (casings). Measure the width of windows, closets, and doors to include the casings. Record on your plan.
STEP 3:As a check, add all the dimensions along one wall to make sure they add up to the overall dimension.
You now have a layout of your room!
